Alright ladies, I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty sure I’ve consumed at least 3 pounds of cookies and other Christmas goodies in the last 72 hours. I’m on Christmas vacation, Christmas music is playing in the background, I’m surrounded by my family. OBVIOUSLY, I’m going to indulge in some delicious homemade goodness! Sadly, Christmas is officially over, but I have decided to get a little head start on my fitness journey for the new year! Keep on reading if you want to learn my tips to debloat after the holidays and not feel like the overstuffed turkey you ate last night for dinner.
How to Debloat After the Holidaze
My biggest tip and the one that personally works best for me, is SWEATING IT OUT!!! Nothing makes me feel less bloated than throwing on my sweat wrap and doing some cardio, I prefer the stair master or HIIT on the treadmill. (lol let me rephrase that; I hate all cardio but I hate the stair master and HIIT just an itsy bit less.) Your bloating could be from excess water that your body is storing, so by working up a good sweat you can decrease some of the water weight and make your tummy feel better while also getting a killer workout in!
Here’s my favorite sweatband that is super affordable and gets the job done! I purchased mine from Walmart a couple of months ago for less than $10. (This is not an affiliate link, just a product I really like to use.)
C’mon, do I really even need to say this one? Drink some water! Lots of water! Throw some lemons and cucumber in there if ya feelin’ fancyyyy! There’s no magical detox water that’s going to make you drop 15lbs. overnight, but adding fruits can add some flavor to your water to make you drink more and it adds some extra antioxidants. Try cutting out drinks that are high in sugar and/or that are carbonated. Anytime I drink carbonated beverages (I love flavored fizzy waters) I look ten months pregnant. Yes, ten months.
I remember looking at website after website trying to figure out how to get rid of my awful bloating and I kept reading the same things like “drink hot water with lemon,” or “go on a juice cleanse,” and while those things may work for others, they had ZERO effect on me, nor did I want to live off juice like wuuttt?? My third tip that actually works for me is stretching. I don’t go through a huge yoga routine but simple yoga postures really help me feel less bloated and generally more relaxed. Some poses I like to do are child’s pose and downward dog.
Again, going along with the tips that work for ME, taking a super hot steamy shower helps my bloating go away. Whenever I feel bloated, I normally feel overall sluggish and gross so taking a nice hot shower and feeling super fresh after always helps. You can also go to a sauna which can be beneficial and rejuvenating! I sometimes follow my shower with a nice face mask and facial massage to help drain the lymphatic system. As someone whose face likes to puff up like the Pillsbury dough boy, putting two spoons in the freezer for a couple of hours and massaging it over your face will feel LIFE CHANGING. If you’re feeling boujee you can use actual face massagers or rollers but baby girl is balling on a budget so I’m going to stick to my frozen spoons. (One time I was short on time and didn’t have spoons already in the fridge, so I sat there with two of my younger sister’s frozen gogurts on my eyes. Gotta do whatcha gotta go.)
Keep moving! After a big meal, laying on the couch and binge watching The Office is only going to make you feel more lethargic and bloated. Try doing a few of these things to get you on your feet.
- Take a walk
- Dance to “Conga” by Gloria Estefan (always gets me moving)
- Clear out some clutter, it’ll make you feel hella productive and keep you busy
- Play with the dog or take him for a walk
- Play with your younger family members that are visiting for the holidays
- Challenge your sibling to a dance battle
- If you live in the snow belt like I do #northeastohio you can go build a snow man with the fam! Burns loads of calories and you’re making memories.
p.s After doing minimal physical activity, proceed to watch The Office. #priorities. ( & happy hormones always do the body good!)
I was only going to do 5 tips but I wanted to throw this one in there. My biggest tip on debloating after the holidays is to not beat yourself up about it! If you over ate, I know I did, it’s okay! Tomorrow is a fresh day to
stuff your face with cookies *cough cough* I mean, tomorrow is a fresh day to start eating healthy again and prepare to kick major ass in 2018.
